Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord—you serve the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 HCSB)
While Dave Branon’s question in today’s ODB came from an enquiring little granddaughter, mine comes from my past as a “strong-willed child.” To this day it’s still important to me to figure out how what I am doing fits into a bigger picture. I want to know what my contribution does to help “the team.” I just sometimes need the reminder that “my team” is something bigger than I think.
On a picnic with my father-in-law this week he was recounting a story of some things he did on his leave during his time serving in the army in Germany. He mentioned how awkward it felt to ride in the city bus and hear all the conversations around him in German without understanding a single word. He commented how it seems more and more that he feels that way in this culture – that though we experience the same sights, sounds and smells, we can’t seem to communicate because we just don’t speak the same language. (See also Hebrews 11:13-14)
The above reminder from later in the chapter of the focus passage is the reminder that, while I should be exemplary in all I say and do whatever my task, I should remember who I always represent – in uniform and out, on the clock and off. I may never get the notice of my peers and supervisors for my service, but I’m okay with that now. When done with the right “why,” there is no such thing as an “unsung hero” only “unearthly songs.”
